Just another day in paradise with a little bit of excitement mixed in. At 10:07PM HST Friday January 14th, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a Tsunami Warning Alert for all of the Hawaiian Islands. The warning was issued after a massive volcanic eruption near one of the Tongan islands in the South Pacific.
While it’s good news that today’s Tsunami Warning has now been lifted, it’s always good to be aware of all of the local weather and environmental conditions when visiting Maui. Maui has very diverse weather conditions in a very small area. From snow on top of Haleakala to windy conditions in Napili on the West side and hot, sunny and arid conditions in South Kihei, you’ll find just about any condition you could think of. Maui is definitely paradise to visit, it has it’s dangers as well.
Makena Landing is a fairly small beach but has excellent snorkeling and diving. We should caution you that the waves to get out into the water can be a bit rough, so it’s not the best beach for first time snorkeler. However, if you’ve got the water skills this is a great spot to get in and see and interact with some excellent sea life.
Turtle Town! You’ve heard of it? Well Makena Landing is a famous snorkeling spot because it’s it’s short swim out to turtle town or five graves. You’ll often find Turtle Town advertised as a spot that snorkeling boats take you to —however, if you’re a strong swimmer, and the conditions are good, many people are able to make it out from the beach on their own!
Looking for some place super family friendly? You’ve come to the right place, plus it’s also a great snorkeling spot. The water is pretty calm most of the time, and it’s a great place to get in and explore, without heading too far from the beach. You’ll find a reef on the north side of Ulua beach, which separates Ulua beach from Mokapu beach.
This beach has lots of convenient features including a really great parking lot with quite a bit of space. Like most Maui beaches it will fill up on weekends or during high season, so come early. Well kept bathrooms and showers are near by if you’re not a fan of spending all day in the sun, there are many trees that provide plenty of shade.
Since we spend most of our time at the Maui Banyan and Kihei Akahi resorts, this is one of our favorites because it’s close and walkable. Many of our guests have reported that Honu (turtles) are often seen here as well. But don’t overlook the great snorkeling to be had on this section of Maui’s South Shore. Check out the reef on the North Side – it’s the best place to look for your favorite fish and probably some turtles. Please remember, when coming across a turtle to give it plenty of room and never approach or touch a turtle….the fines are stiff!
Even thought most of our guests at the Maui Banyan and Kihei Akahi find it easiest to walk, there is also a large parking lot as well as street parking availability. If you get tired of the sand, there is a huge grassy area, trees for shade, as well as a picnic tables and even a swing set for the kids. These amenities make it easy to spent the entire day here, snorkeling and lounging on the beach. Overall this is a great white sand beach for any day trip.
Everyone knows thing on Maui operate on “Island Time” and the opening of the new Chick-Fil-A is no exception. As reported by Maui Now, the Chick-Fil-A restaurant coming to Kahalui near Maui’s main airport is still on track for a 2022 opening, albeit a little delayed. The planned Spring Grand Opening won’t be happening, but with any luck by mid-Summer both tourists and locals alike will be able to enjoy all the fried chicken goodness that Chick-Fil-A is known for on the Mainland. We’ll keep you posted as the opening gets a little closer.
The Maui Banyan T-204 is a 2 Bedroom and 2 Bathroom, 950 square foot vacation rentable condominium. This condo is very comfortable and super convenient – a short 1 minute walk to the upper pool and just 5 minutes down to Kamaole Beach Park II, one of Maui’s finest beaches.
Completely updated with modern, stainless steel appliances and designer touches, this condo provides a clean, comfortable place to host your family of up to 6 guests. There is one King size bed in the main bedroom and a Queen sized bed in the second bedroom, which can also be used as a lock-off unit for additional privacy. If need be, the couch located in the main living area also features a pull-out sofa sleeper for your convenience.
Some of the best features of Maui Banyan T-204 are it’s proximity to both the pool and beaches, but also the small, private parking lot located near the rear of the property which provides quick get-in/get-out access which many guests prefer to parking the the garage structure. As unit T-204 is located towards the eastern side of the Maui Banyan resort, it tends to be much quieter and is not subject to the constant road noise from South Kihei Road – something many guests appreciate about this unit.

Maui High season is off to a great start as the resorts and beaches on the island paradise are as busy as ever. Actually since seeing a tourist “explosion” starting on Valentines day weekend in February, things haven’t slowed down one bit.
If you haven’t already made your hotel or condo reservations, you may want to do so before you hop on that plane. Once High Season on Maui begins, it’s often difficult to locate quality accommodations. With travel restrictions starting to loosen, Maui is definitely the place to be this winter. While some may be rethinking their plans with the most recent “variant”, occupancy levels remain high and are expected to do so for the foreseeable future.
If you’re looking for a place to stay, check out Sunny Maui Vacations as they have many short term, vacation rentable condos under management and available for your vacation travel to Maui. In 2021 the Maui Film Festival returned, albeit in a virtual fashion, online. For 2022 we’re hopeful that this annual tradition will return to Wailea in South Maui. The latest update is that the annual film festival will take place this year from July 6-10 While there is no updates yet on a location, we’re hopeful that the festival will return to the golf course in Wailea as in previous years.
